7 Ways to prepare your home for a great summer

The last thing you want to be doing is spending the summer doing house chores and repairs, so get moving now and get that done, so that you can relax and enjoy all that the summer months have to offer.

Here are 7 things that you can do to prepare you home to make the most of the summer months that are around the corner.

Where?

Action steps

Roof including gutters and downpipes.

Just like many of our northern counterparts our roofs get subjected to harsh weather conditions all year round.

Inspect it for any signs of damage such as tears, cracks, and missing tiles or sheets.

If you have a flat roof, be sure to check for pooling water

It's also a good time to have roof tiles cleaned of moss and lichen.

Gutters and downpipes should also be looked at to ensure they are clean and clear.

Driveway

A well-kept driveway can and does  add value and significantly increase kerb appeal, so it is worth spending some time ensuring it looks ship shape.

Keep it tidy by removing clutter (discarded rubbish, children’s toys, weeds and lifeless plants) and sprucing up the outdoor space with pot plants, a new feature or even giving it a new coat of paint, if its paved.

Having a paved driveway jet cleaned and replacing any broken pavers, gives it an immediate new lease on life.

In the case of gravel driveways, re-distribute or add new gravel if needed to ensure that the area is suitably covered.

Garage

If you are one of the fortunate people to have one - now is the time to make sure that its neat and tidy, ready for the summer.

Having things organised and uncluttered, can free up valuable space and allow you immediate access when you need something in a hurry.

Organise the space to your personal preference and with easy access in mind.

Make sure you have easy access to the summer specific items such as the children’s bicycles, the paddling pool, garden tools, beach items or the trusty old BBQ and garden furniture sets if they haven't been kept outside.

It's all about making it easy to reach whatever item is needed, without much fuss.

Doors and windows

Are the doors and windows opening properly?

Are there cracks and splits where the warm air may come into the home?

Repair these minor faults and save money.

Replace any cracked or broken windows and those doors handles and locks that are just on their last legs.

Outdoor furniture

Your outdoor furniture needs to be brought out, dusted off, wiped down, cleaned, polished or painted if necessary. Have a good look at the cushion covers  - they may need to be laundered or replaced depending upon their condition.

Has the family grow since last summer - do you have enough seats or dining spaces to accommodate everybody? If not, it may be time to invest in a new garden set.

Air conditioning and ceiling fans

The last thing you want in those hot summer months is for the cooling systems to break down.

Make sure that the air conditioning is checked and serviced and any filters replaced before the summer days arrive.

Ceiling Fans should get a good clean and check to make sure the motor is running perfectly.

Outdoor spaces

Tidy up and improve your outdoor spaces, be it your balcony, patio, roof terrace or any other outside area.

Get out there and tidy up in terms of removing debris, jet washing the surface and consider injecting some new life with plants or a water feature , maybe a mosaic mural on the wall ? Anything that will allow you and your family to enjoy this space in the coming summer months.

What about outdoor lighting and heating? If you would like to enjoy the outdoor space well into the evening, this will need some consideration.

This may all seem very logical, but it's amazing to find just how much one misses, when you are not really focused on getting the right things done. Attending to the above 7 items will go a very long way in making your summer one of the best ever.

Enjoy !!
